Whoever controls the world's most advanced computer chips controls the future of artificial intelligence, and much of the economy and military that will run on it. That's why the US and China are locked in a quiet, escalating struggle over a few grams of silicon.

The most consequential fight on the planet right now isn't over land or oil. It's over chips — the fingernail-sized pieces of silicon that run your phone, your car, the internet, and every major artificial-intelligence system on earth.

Two superpowers, the United States and China, are locked in a struggle to control the world's most advanced semiconductors. It's being called the "chip war," and it will shape which country leads in AI, in economic power and in military strength for decades. Here's what it actually is — and why it matters to you.

Why Chips Are the New Oil

A semiconductor — a "chip" — is the brain inside every piece of modern electronics. The most advanced chips, packed with billions of microscopic transistors, are what make artificial intelligence possible: training and running AI models takes staggering amounts of computing power, delivered by cutting-edge chips. Access to the best chips provides a major advantage in building frontier AI. And whoever controls their supply holds a lever over the entire world economy.

That's why chips are often described as the new oil: a resource so essential that access to it is now a matter of national security, not just business.

What the "War" Actually Is

The chip war is mostly fought through export controls — rules that stop China from buying the most advanced American chips and the machines used to make them. The logic from Washington is simple: keep the very best technology out of China's hands to slow its progress in AI and advanced weapons. In response, China is pouring money into building its own chip industry so it never depends on the West again.

The battle centres on a handful of choke points — rare places in the supply chain where a single company or country is nearly irreplaceable, and whoever controls them controls everyone else.

The Choke Points

Nvidia (United States) designs the world's best AI chips — the ones everyone wants. TSMC, in Taiwan, actually manufactures most of the world's most advanced chips; almost no one else can make them at the cutting edge. And ASML, in the Netherlands, is the only company on earth that makes the extraordinary machines (called EUV lithography) needed to produce those chips at all.

Notice how narrow that is: a US designer, a Taiwanese manufacturer, a Dutch machine-maker. Control any one of them and you can throttle the whole chain — which is exactly why the US has leaned on allies like the Netherlands, Japan and South Korea to restrict what they sell to China.

Where It Stands in 2026

2026 has shown how hard this is to get right. American policy has repeatedly zig-zagged — specific restrictions tightened, then loosened, then reworked — leaving even industry experts struggling to keep up. The broader direction, however, is clear: controls are widening beyond finished chips to the equipment, software and raw materials behind them. There is also growing pressure in Washington to go further — including proposed legislation (not yet law) that would hand Congress a veto over chip-export licences, a power that currently sits with the executive branch.

The effect on business has been striking. Nvidia, which once commanded the overwhelming majority of China's AI-chip market, has seen that dominance erode sharply as restrictions push Chinese buyers toward home-grown alternatives — an early sign that trying to cut China off may also be accelerating its drive for self-sufficiency.

China's Counter-Move

China is not sitting still. It's investing enormous sums to build domestic chip champions and reduce its reliance on foreign technology. And it holds a powerful card of its own: rare earths — a group of minerals essential for electronics, EVs and defence, which China dominates the processing of. By restricting rare-earth exports, Beijing can apply painful pressure right back. The result is a tit-for-tat where each side probes the other's dependencies.

This isn't abstract geopolitics. The chip war affects the price and availability of the devices you buy, the speed of AI progress that will reshape jobs and industries, and the stability of the global economy — because so much of it now runs on a supply chain with a few fragile choke points. Above all, it's a live lesson in how technology has become the main arena of power between nations. The 20th century's rivalries were about oil and territory. This one is about who makes the chips.

On Choke Points

Power in a supply chain sits wherever something is hard to replace. The whole chip war turns on a few irreplaceable links — Nvidia's designs, TSMC's manufacturing, ASML's machines. Spotting choke points is a genuinely useful business and geopolitical skill: find the step no one else can do, and you've found where the leverage lives.

On Unintended Consequences

Cutting a rival off can backfire. By restricting sales to China, the US has cost Nvidia much of a huge market and pushed China to build its own chips faster. It's a classic strategic dilemma: the move that weakens an opponent today can strengthen their independence tomorrow.

On Leverage Both Ways

Dependencies run in every direction. The US exerts enormous influence over advanced chip design and export policy; China controls the processing of rare-earth minerals the West needs. Each can hurt the other, which is what makes the standoff so tense — and why an all-out break would damage everyone. Interdependence is both a weapon and a restraint.

The country that leads in advanced semiconductors is likely to lead in artificial intelligence — and AI will shape the economy, jobs and security of your entire adult life.
