School Leaver Schemes
The Big 4, major banks, law firms, and consultancies that hire straight from A-levels — with professional qualifications included and graduate-equivalent salaries within five years.
Salary figures and programme details reflect UK market data as of 2026. Always verify specifics directly with employers before making decisions.
School leaver programmes are structured employment pathways offered by major professional services firms to A-level leavers as an alternative to university. You earn a salary, gain professional qualifications (the same ones graduate hires pursue), and avoid student debt entirely. The most competitive are harder to get into than a Russell Group university.
School leaver programmes are often structured as degree apprenticeships under the hood — the employer categorises them as apprenticeships for funding purposes — but they are marketed and designed as professional employment programmes.
The key difference from a generic apprenticeship: they are at prestigious employers in professional services, they lead to specific professional qualifications (ACA, ACCA, CIMA, SQE), and they have structured rotation, mentorship, and development frameworks.
The outcome: the same professional qualification a graduate hire would pursue — but started earlier, earned while working, and with no student debt.
Goldman Sachs offers school leaver entry into operations, technology, and corporate functions. Competitive — similar rigour to their graduate recruitment. Starting salary £24,000–£30,000. One of the most prestigious school leaver opportunities available.
J.P. Morgan runs a School and College Leaver Programme across multiple divisions — technology, operations, finance — as a structured two-year programme with rotation.
HSBC, Barclays, and Lloyds Banking Group all have school leaver or higher apprenticeship entry routes in retail banking, financial services, and operations. Less competitive than Goldman and J.P. Morgan but structured and well-paying.
Since 2021, it is possible to qualify as a solicitor in England and Wales via the SQE route without a law degree. Several major law firms now run solicitor apprenticeships taking school leavers to full qualification over six years:
Six years is a long commitment — but you qualify as a fully-admitted solicitor at the same level as those who did a law degree, LPC, and training contract. And you earn throughout.
The CILEx route — becoming a Chartered Legal Executive — is an alternative to qualifying as a solicitor, achievable without any degree via the Chartered Institute of Legal Executives' own qualification pathway.
IBM runs technology school leaver schemes in software development, cybersecurity, and data. Well-structured, and IBM's apprenticeship programme is one of the oldest in UK tech.
Amazon offers operations, technology, and finance school leaver pathways. Amazon is one of the largest apprenticeship employers in the UK.
BT Group has technology apprenticeships and school leaver programmes in network engineering, software, and cybersecurity.
Microsoft runs technology apprenticeships in the UK, primarily in sales, technical support, and software development roles.
The defence sector — BAE Systems, Rolls-Royce, Babcock — all have significant school leaver intake into engineering, technology, and defence roles.
These are not easy applications. The most competitive programmes — Big 4, Goldman Sachs, Magic Circle law — have acceptance rates of under 5%.
Typical process: online application form → online tests (numerical, verbal, situational judgement — often the same tests used for graduate recruitment) → video interview or telephone interview → assessment centre (group exercises, case studies, interviews).
Timeline: applications typically open September–November for September starts the following year. Do not wait until spring.
Preparation: research the firm and the specific programme, prepare examples using the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result), practise numerical and verbal reasoning tests using free online resources (Assessment Day, Job Test Prep), and treat every stage as a final-round interview.
School leaver programmes are not an inferior version of graduate recruitment. They are a parallel track — designed for a different entry point but leading to the same destination. The firms that run them are not doing it out of charity. They do it because school leavers who qualify through their programmes become excellent professionals. Apply with that understanding.
